Obituary of Steven James Nickerson
Steven J. Nickerson, 77, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2025, at his daughter’s home, surrounded by family. He was born Dec. 7, 1947 to Leigh and Annie (Pooler) Nickerson of Washburn. He attended local schools and received his diploma from Presque Isle High School. After graduation in 1965, he joined the United States Navy where he served in active duty from 1965-1969 during the Vietnam war. He returned to Maine and was employed with the Fort Fairfield Water District, later becoming a self-employed contractor until he retired in 2020.
Steve was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nita Nickerson; his parents; sister, Glenice Huston and brother, Norris Nickerson. Surviving are four children, Stephanie Bragdon of Corinth, Scott Doughty and his wife, Denise of Presque Isle, Sandra Oakes and her husband, James of Fort Fairfield and Sheri Williams and her husband, Reuben of New Brunswick; 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He cherished his extended family, the Bragdon’s from Corinth.
Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman with a great passion for the outdoors. Some of his fondest memories were spent in the Northern Maine woods at Peter and Pam Newcomb’s and Les Cote’s camp. Steve will be remembered for his love to gamble, always entertaining Friday night poker games at his house for many years.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to Aroostook County Hospice, The House of Comfort and Penobscot House of Comfort for the compassionate care of Steve.
To honor Steve’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Notice will be given at a later date for a Spring Memorial and Celebration of Life.
