Obituary of Lois A. Spellman

Lois Aline Spellman, 93, wife of the late John H. “Hacko” Spellman, passed peacefully June 25, 2025, at her home in Bangor surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 3, 1931, in Bangor, the daughter of Andrew E. and Kathryn A. (Givren) Higgins.

Surviving are a sister, Judith (Higgins) Smith of Bangor, four children, Kathryn J. Vance and husband Peter of Rock Hill, SC, James K. Spellman of Masardis, Jacqulyn L. Williams and husband Peter of Bangor, Christine A. Gellerson of Bangor; grandchildren, Amy Hakola of Orono, Anna Gellerson of Bangor, Kathryn (Spearing) Wilcox of Bangor, Sarah (Spearing) Nida and husband John of New Orleans, LA., Michael Vance of Albany, NY., Amanda (Vance) Clough of Rock Hill, SC, Jonathan Martin of Bangor; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.  Lois was predeceased by her husband; her son, John D. Spellman in 2020, a brother, Douglas Higgins, a sister, Margaret McGinley, and two grandsons, Christopher and Jackson.

Lois was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, providing care and love to each new generation as “Nana”.  She loved cooking and baking for her family and there was always a place at the table for any “new family” who may appear.  She was a lifelong member of the Holly Club, forming many close and enduring friendships.  Lois worked at Libby’s and Rebecca’s gift shops for many years, providing many customers with welcoming smiles and service.  In addition to cooking, Lois loved working in her garden, in later years supervising her children putting in her garden, and watching grandchildren and great-grandchildren picking cucumbers, peas, and green beans. She was also a lifelong communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church.

Family and friends may visit from 4:00PM to 6:00PM Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM, Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, York St., Bangor. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Messages and memories may be shared with her family on the tribute wall of kileyandfoley.com.
