John Bennett Douglas, age 91, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine on July 1, 2025. He was born in Hiram, Maine on October 3, 1933 to Clarence and Margaret (Pike) Douglas.
John attended local schools and graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1951. He attended the University of Maine, studying agronomy and graduating in 1955. In August that year he joined the Army and was an active duty serviceman for 2 years, he then transferred to the Army Reserves for 4 more years. While being stationed in Newfoundland in 1957, he met his future wife, Irene Hiscock, on a blind date. They were married on October 1, 1957 and spent the next 67 years together.
John worked as a salesman at Agway for many years traveling all over the state selling Agway products. He enjoyed visiting with farmers and helping them care for their crops. He always traveled with biscuits in his pockets for the farmers’ dogs, too. He had a wide variety of interests that kept him and Irene busy. They always had a large garden and enjoyed sharing their crops with friends. He loved baseball and spent many hours listening to Red Sox games on the radio, watching games on TV, and traveling to Fenway Park. John and Irene also had a passion for lighthouses. They visited every lighthouse on the coast of Maine, including remote places like Matinicus Rock. John loved to learn about each lighthouse’s history and admired the men and their families who kept the light burning. He and Irene were adventurous! After retirement, John planned many trips throughout the U.S. They visited places like the Grand Canyon, the Badlands and the Great Lakes. They hiked to the summit of Mt. Katahdin and rode the Cog Railway to the summit of Mt. Washington.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene, and his sister, Kathleen Hendrick of Cornish, Maine. He is survived by his sisters Mary Trickey of Middletown, RI, Susan Moulton of Hiram, ME, and many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
