Gerald F. Dube Obituary
Gerald Dubé passed away peacefully at home Saturday, March 21, 2026, when he was reunited with the love of his life, Marie-Claire. He was born in Madawaska, ME on March 28, 1940, to Simeon and Mattie Dubé. He attended elementary school in Madawaska and high school at the Junior Oblate Seminary in Bucksport, ME. After high school he attended the Oblate Seminary in Bar Harbor, ME (now College of the Atlantic) for his first two college years.
After taking a year off he returned to studies earning BA and MA degrees at the University of Maine in Mathematics. Upon graduation he accepted an instructor position at the University of Maine focusing primarily on emerging computer related curriculum. In this position he developed several courses which later became an integral part of the Computer Science degree program at the University.
In addition to teaching, this position also included the support of a developing computer center which soon provided administrative support for all the University of Maine System locations and required the deployment of a communications network in the state. In 1989 Gerry obtained an NSF grant to interconnect this state network to the internet, the first major internet connection in Maine. In 1993 he received a second NSF grant to connect to the Internet-2 research network with increased capacity. As a public service, other early adopters such as schools and libraries were allowed to connect through the University network.
One project that Gerry was most proud of actually fell outside his University responsibilities. As part of a settlement in a rate case, the telephone company was charged with bringing communication relief to schools and libraries by establishing a common network. Gerry submitted a proposal to deploy, manage, and support this network and to interconnect it with the existing University network. By 1996 all school buildings and public libraries, including several on islands off the coast, were interconnected, the first state in the union to do so. That network still exists today as an integral part of a much expanded NETWORK Maine.
Outside of work Gerry wanted to provide an opportunity for his young sons to play hockey. With the help of a few interested parents he formed the Brewer Youth Hockey program in the early 1970s, spending nights flooding an outdoor rink and coaching many youth teams. He managed the Brewer hockey program for 10 years culminating in getting hockey approved as a high school sport in 1983 at Brewer High School. When the children were young, he enjoyed the many family camping trips to various locations in Maine and Canada. In later years when career choices dispersed his children across the country, Gerry and Marie-Claire traveled frequently to visit. He especially enjoyed the many family reunions on Mount Desert Island and Cape Cod. Gerry was a communicant at St. Paul the Apostle Parish where he served on several committees and served as sacristan, eucharistic minister, altar server, and reader.
He was predeceased by his parents Simeon and Mattie of Madawaska, ME, his wife Marie-Claire of 59 years, little brother Joel (1944) and brother Guilford.
Gerry is survived by sons Dan Dubé and wife Ann of Framingham, MA, Mark Dubé and wife Alicia of Savage, MN, David Dubé and wife Heidi Stump of Boulder, CO, daughter Michelle Keenan and husband Sean of Alexandria, VA, grandchildren Nicole, Christine, Claudia, Caitlin, Natalie, Bridget, David, Laura, and great-grandchild Danny. He is also survived by 3 sisters: Rachel Ouellette of Abington, MD, Leola Moss of Arlington, MA and Eloise (Charlie) Batchelder of Gardner, ME. He also leaves 3 brothers: Lionel (Peggy) of Upton, MA, Joel (Priscilla) of Williston, VT, and Elden (Sarah) of Quechee, VT. He leaves behind a large extended family of nephews, nieces, and many cousins.
The family wishes to thank Brewer Davita Dialysis, St. Joseph’s Hospice care, St. Joseph Hospital, Northern Light Healthcare and the wonderful team at St. Paul the Apostle Parish. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Parish Hall of St. Mary's Catholic Church, immediately following the services.
