It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Onias Martin announce that he passed away unexpectedly at home of natural causes on April 23, 2026. Peter was born June 19,1950, in Edmundston, New Brunswick, Canada, to Paul E. and Georgette T. (Lajoie) Martin. He was proud of his Acadian heritage and, in fact, only spoke French until the age of 4 when his family moved from Madawaska, Maine to Bangor.

Peter was a longtime resident of Bangor. He graduated from John Bapst High School in 1969 and attended the University of Maine. Peter followed in his father’s footsteps and became a well-loved carpenter in Bangor and surrounding towns.

Peter loved to travel and reminisced fondly about visiting his son, Adam in Bangkok and sister, Rose in Hawaii. A highlight was his trip to France with his sister, Madeleine to participate in commemorating his war hero Uncle Onias’s service.

Peter was an avid reader and craftsman with so many loves and knowledge of music, nature and the arts. He was a true caretaker of family, friends, fur babies, gardens, and friends to be. Peter’s last two years were his happiest after finding the love of his life, Martha Gladstone. They had a special bond and looked forward to their future together.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, all aunts and uncles, and some cousins. Surviving are four children, Lucas Martin of New Hampshire, Megan McLaughlin of Massachusetts, Adam Martin of Bangkok, Thailand, and Keelin Martin of Bangor. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Eli and Ansel Martin, Orin and Nora Corey. Two sisters survive Peter, Madeleine Martin of Massachusetts and Rosemarie Martin of Bangor; two nieces, Sarah Richards and Sophie Gray and their families; and many first cousins.

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held in June.
