Carmel—Robert Francis Mahon, 74, passed away April 16, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. He was born Nov. 25, 1942, in Millinocket, the son of Francis and Winifred (Darling) Mahon. Robert attended school in Carmel and graduated from Carmel High in 1961. He joined the Air Force following high school and served until 1965. Following discharge, he attended college for one year and met his future wife Sheila Richards. They married in 1967 and made their home in Carmel. Robert worked for Viner Shoe and Mammoth-Mart Department Store before going to work for Maine Central Railroad and its many successors. He retired from the railroad in 2005. He and Sheila enjoyed traveling in their retirement, including Washington D.C., Branson, Nashville, and several Western states. He spent much of his retirement traveling around and aggravating people! He was a member of the Carmel Fire Department, Penobscot County Conservation Assoc., and was active in the Boy Scouts. He collected countless items to benefit the Children's Miracle Network Yard Sale. Robert was always helping the underdog and always had a good joke to tell. "Our hearts are broken with the passing of our amazing Dad. He was the most selfless, hard working, loving family man and true friend to everyone who was blessed to cross his path. He taught us how to tie knots, build campfires and live off twigs and bark if need be. He was the epitome of a true hero. Thank you for being our Dad and loving us unconditionally, we'll miss you more than you'll ever know. Rest easy now Boy scout Bob, we'll take it from here." He was predeceased by his parents; brother William Mahon; nieces and nephews Dawn Marie Hatch, Jody Mahon, Kevin Mahon; in-laws David Hatch, Judith Mahon, James Dougherty.
