Obituary of Lewis A Sawyer

Brewer—Lewis A. Sawyer, 73, passed away at a Bangor healthcare facility Feb. 24, 2017 after a short illness. He was born in Bangor Nov. 17, 1943, to Arthur and Agnes (Montgomery) Sawyer. Lewis joined the United States Navy from 1962 to 1965. He served aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid and was part of the crew on March 23, 1964, that recovered the astronauts and spacecraft of Gemini 3 following the second American manned spaceflight. He returned to Maine and was a carpenter for many years. Most recently, he was employed by Uniship in Bangor. Lewis was a lifelong member of the Orrington Rod & Gun Club and the NRA. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Robert M. Sawyer. He is survived by daughter Amanda R. Sawyer; son Dan T. O'Neill; countless friends and family. A memorial celebration will be held 2:30-5 PM Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the Eastern Maine Snowmobilers Club, 263 Levenseller Road, Holden.
