I worked with Rob at Unity College and soon came to recognize him as a friendly and gentle person and I appreciated the way that he made a point to ask for my opinions. I always noticed the little turns of phrase he used, perhaps due to his upbringing in Canada, like "an whatnot." I know that from here on, when I hear someone say "and whatnot," I will think fondly of Rob and his time at Unity College.
Sorry for your loss,
Sincerely, Ellen Batchelder

We are so very sorry for your loss.
Prayers and hugs are being sent to you.
When I worked with Rob at FHSU, you could see and feel how each and every one was important to him. If someone had a problem, he would come back later with a solution to try and make things better. His heart was open to everyone. He wanted everyone to be happy and he would do his very best to make it happen.
I am so blessed that I had the opportunity to work with him. We have all lost a wonderful man and he will never be forgotten.

I had the fortune of meeting Rob almost 20yrs ago when he came to Fort Hays State University and started the Criminal Justice program. Rob's unbridled teaching methods captivated me, as did his talent for provoking deep rooted discussions and thoughts. Prior to taking classes with Rob, I was literally in the low C to D range student due to lack of interest and motivation. I can honestly say Rob completely turned my undergraduate academic career around and put me on track to being a successful student. But Rob's efforts didn't stop there.
Rob was very perceptive in identifying specific abilities of his students and worked to grow those talents. Rob determined mine was writing. Rob pushed me in my writing in a way which truly unlocked my ability to derive and capture information into erudite thoughts and works in which he found intrigue.
Rob knew I, like most in the CJ program, wanted to get into law enforcement. I specifically wanted to get into Federal Law Enforcement. Rob went further in his encouragements in supporting my goals and had a frank discussion with me where he told me I needed to consider going to Graduate school first. I retched at the thought, but Rob made enough convincing arguments to provoke me to pursue it. Even further still, Rob helped focus my applications to specific schools with fantastic Criminal Justice programs, to which I was later accepted and graduated with top grades. Following grad school, I ultimately achieved my goal of becoming a Federal Agent with Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
I say all this because it captures who Rob was. He was a motivator, a provocateur of ideas, a wonderful mentor, a shrewd judge of character, and a selfless benefactor of students with a sharp, humorous wit.
Rob is the person I hold responsible for starting me on my life's path which has taken me to where I am today. If it weren't for Rob, I most likely would not have graduated college, let alone graduate school. I've also never ruled out the possibility of pursuing my PhD to perpetuate the ideals I experienced with Rob.
My heart is heavy in losing such a great mentor and friend. However, I am proud to have experienced and benefitted from all of Rob's wonderful attributes. Take pride in knowing your husband, your brother, and your father was such an influential and inspirational force who positively affected so many. Rest well friend. You will truly be missed.

There are a few select people that I consider "good people". Rob ranked very high on my list of good people. I'll keep his charge alive by doing what he taught me to do...do it right and get it done, no excuses.
Love to Rob's family and friends...

Rob was my CJ professor and, eventually, predecessor and mentor in the Justice Studies Dpt. at Fort Hays State University. He hooked me up with my first teaching gig in '99 and, nearly 20 years later, I'm still in the front of the classroom pulling shenanigans--as I was taught to do! Know that many students and colleagues will take a piece of this "cat" into their personal lives and professional occupations. --BK

We are going to miss our friend Rob. We knew his suffering was great & we knew he was not living the life he wanted in the last 2-3 weeks of life but saying good-bye is difficult. He fiercely loved his wife Tina and he was crazy proud of his children & his grandchildren. We can thank God that he placed Rob in our lives, if only for a short while. We will attempt our shenanigans in a way befitting Rob. Prayers for the family.
