Obituary of Elena Mary Leighton

Bangor—Elena Mary Leighton, 85, passed away in Bangor on Dec. 28, 2015. She was born in Milbridge on October 13, 1930, the daughter of Jasper Leonard and Hazel Mary (Bell) Leighton. Elena graduated from Bangor High School and the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. She worked at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She then joined the staff at the VA Hospital at Togus, where she retired in 1986 after 30 years of service. Elena is survived by brother Philip B. and wife and Betty Leighton of Spring Branch, TX; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and stepfather, Fred Stanley; brother Robert L. Leighton, Sr.; half brothers Don Stanley, Jasper Leighton Jr., Daniel Leighton and William Leighton; half sisters, Marie Stanley, Dorothy Leighton Snyder and Virginia Leighton Dow. At Elena’s request, there will be no services. Burial will be in the spring in the family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport.
