Obituary of Alfred Leo Cormier

Bangor & Brewer--Alfred L. Cormier, 93, died December 31, 2017. He was born in Lewiston February 24, 1924, the son of Leo and Laura (Despres) Cormier.

He moved to Bangor at a young age and attended St. Mary's School and John Bapst High School. He graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in the fall of 1942 and received his Pilot's Wings in early 1944. He was sent to China, where he flew C-47 transport planes with the 322nd Troop Carrier Squadron of the 14th Air Force. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Upon discharge, he joined the Maine Air National Guard. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict, serving two years of active duty. He left the Guard in 1954 with the rank of Captain. He was employed by Bangor Roofing & Sheet Metal for 25 years as Engineering and Sales Representative, Treasurer, and General Manager. He was Vice President of Hahnel Bros. in Lewiston. He served on the Board of Directors for both companies. Upon retirement, he started two companies of his own: Maine Metalcrafts and Technical Consultants, which kept him occupied for 15 years. He was a Certified Manufacturing Engineer, senior member of Chapter 46 in Maine, a member of Pine State Amateur Radio Club, Penobscot Valley Computer Society, and a life member of the Hermon Skeet Club.

He was predeceased by daughter Dr. Pamela Cormier; sister Lorraine Shahan; brothers Gerald and Edward. Alfred is survived by beloved wife Myrtle (Knapp) Cormier of Brewer; son Patrick and wife Terri Cormier of Ellsworth; daughter Paula Campbell-Cohen and husband Gary of Bangor; brothers Raymond and wife Mary Lou of Brewer, Robert and wife Jalene of Mooresville, NC; sisters Theodora Rico of Scarborough, Florine Gabel of Batesville, AR, Shirley and husband Sheldon DeGrasse of Ft. Wayne, IN; sister-in-law Ellie Cormier of Scarborough; grandson Wesley Campbell and wife Carolyn; four stepchildren; nine great-stepchildren; many niece and nephews. The family would like to thank VNA Hospice for the care they provided Alfred.

Interment in the niche wall with military honors will be held 1 PM Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
