Caroline Stevens

Obituary of Caroline Elaine Stevens

Bangor--Caroline E. Stevens, 77, beloved wife of David H. Stevens, died January 20, 2020. She was born September 3, 1942, in Masardis, the daughter of the late Melvin D. and Mary E. Page. Caroline graduated from Ashland High School and, after moving to Bangor, worked to provide customer service at Sears. She later retired from the phone company, having served as a directory assistance operator. Many of her coworkers became lifelong friends. Caroline was a devoted wife to David, the love of her life, creating memories from their camping and sailing explorations. She served as a competent first mate, assuming the role of captain when conditions warranted. She was the wind in David’s sails; when she was on board, he always knew his sails would be full. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her boys and grandkids, and a second mother to many in the neighborhood. Her extravagant generosity was never more evident than at Christmas time, which was her favorite season. In the early 1990s Caroline defied the odds when she survived a life-threatening aneurysm, resulting in health issues that persisted for the rest of her life. She pressed on, exploring artistic expression under the guidance of the late Ed Healy, who became a special friend. Her beautiful creations continue to bless the homes of family and friends. When art was no longer possible for her, she continued to enjoy simple pleasures: watching vintage movies, reading, visiting with family, keeping Dave on his toes, and spending summers at camp. Surviving in addition to her husband of over 50 years are three children, Michael and wife Margret of Bangor, Patrick and wife Molly of Eddington, James of Lebanon, NH; grandchildren, Justine and husband Brian of Newburgh, James and wife Kelley of Bangor, Jessica and husband Trevor of Plymouth, Emily and husband Charlie of Eddington; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Cameron and Maxwell; brother Frank and his wife Doreen; sister, Sharon Abbotoni; special nieces Aimee and Bujji. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401. Services will be private.
