Obituary of Ouida M. Long
Ouida M. Long, 96, passed away Jan. 26, 2020 in Brewer after a period of declining health. She was born April 14, 1923 in Fort Kent, the daughter of Solomon and Evelyn (Beaulieu) Long.
Ouida was educated in the Fort Kent and Eagle Lake school systems and was a graduate of Fort Kent High School, Class of 1941. She worked in New York City from 1941-1943 for Seaboard Financial Corp. on Columbus Circle. She resided at St. Patrick’s Cathedral residence and club for young women. During her stay, she was an interpreter for French military personnel of the Battleship Richelieu that was scuttled in the Mediterranean Sea at the outbreak of WWII and then refloated and towed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for repairs. She returned to Fort Kent in 1943 and worked in the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad freight office. In 1946 her position was transferred to the Bangor office in the historic Graham Building and later to Northern Maine Junction Park. Ouida retired in 1982 as a secretary in the executive department. Ouida was a faithful member and communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, Bangor. She was a life member of Eastern Maine Healthcare and St. Joseph Healthcare Auxiliaries and was a member of St. Mary’s Sodality.
She is survived by a brother, Joseph R. and his wife, Anne E. (Wickstrom) Long of Shrewsbury, MA; five nephews, Wayne Paradis, Roger and David LeBrun, William Jugus and Robert Long; four nieces, Valerie (LeBrun) Bankey, Jeannine LeBrun, Joanne (Long) Tonelli, Denise (Long) Wall. She was predeceased by three sisters, Rita (Long) Paradis and her husband, James Sr., Iris (Long) LeBrun and her husband, Valerian, Margaret Mary (Long) Jugus and her husband, Frank and a brother, Conrad Long; two nephews, Thomas Jugus and James Paradis Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday, January 31, 2020 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor. A reception will be held immediately afterward in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Hudson, NH. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
