Obituary of Mary Kelly Hughes
Mary K. Hughes, 86, passed March 7, 2020, at a Bangor nursing facility with her children and families by her side. She was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Allagash, the firstborn daughter of 13 children to Harley and Elizabeth (Jackson) Kelly.
She married Kenneth F. Hughes and moved to the Greenville area where they worked and raised their eight children. Along with her husband, Ken, she owned and managed several businesses in the Moosehead Lake region, including Kelly’s Landing, Hillside Gardens and Moosehead Country Log Homes. They both loved people and many folks who came to know them held special places in their lives. They were involved and helped establish The Church of the Open Bible, Greenville Baptist Church and Greenville Pentecostal Church. She loved her family in the Allagash and kept them close in her life throughout the years. She loved all of her grandchildren and was especially instrumental in the care of her autistic grandson Kenny.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, Feb. 20, 1996; her parents; her brother, Earl; her brother-in-law, Bernard; and dear sister-in-law, Edith McPherson. She is survived by her eight children and their families, Kenneth “Craig” Hughes and Nancy of Dexter, Barton Hughes and Janice of Hampden, Janelle and Charles Wheldon of Chebeague Island, Jason Hughes and Kathy of Greenville, Cheryl and Dave Price of Glenburn, Beverly and Tim Richards of Bangor, Michael Hughes and Penny of Orono, Marty Kelly and Donald of Glenburn; 23 grandchildren, several great and great-great-grandchildren; 11 brothers and sisters, Roger, Ransford “Pike”, James, Betty Jandreau, Henry, Rita Hall, who was so close and dear to mom’s heart, Claude, Hilda Nadeau, Galen, Hope Kelly and Lee; and brothers-in-law, Russell Hughes and Ewan McPherson.
A gathering with visitation for family and friends will be held 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor where a service honoring her life will be held at 6:30 pm as the visitation concludes. A graveside service will be held at Allagash Baptist Cemetery, later in the spring.
