Obituary of Vaughn W. Knowles
Beech Hill Pond — Vaughn Winn Knowles, 63, husband of Laurie (Neill) Knowles, passed away peacefully at his home on May 19, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in Bangor, October 29, 1956, the son of Henry O. and Cynthia A. (Holyoke) Knowles.
Vaughn was a 1975 graduate of Brewer High School. He attended UMO, while working for Holyoke and Young. He married his high school sweetheart in 1978. He went on to start a career with the telephone company, after 30 years of dedicated service, he retired from Verizon. After retirement, with his nephew Caleb McGary, who was like a son to him, started CUB Construction, building and remodeling homes. He also built his forever home on Beech Hill Pond where he continued to make lasting memories with his loving wife, children and grandchildren, family and lifelong friends. He had an amazing work ethic, a kind heart, and loved life. You could count on him for any adventure. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, cousin, uncle. He put all others needs before his own. Vaughn enjoyed running, water skiing, windsurfing, boating, and playing beach volleyball at the lake. He also had an amazing talent for woodworking, and could build most anything, his Uncle Pete was instrumental in teaching him the art of building a home.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Laurie of Otis and his Mother Cynthia of Brewer are two children, Adam Knowles and his wife Heather of Brewer; Erin Twitchell and her husband Bart of Turner; four grandchildren, Evan and Ryder Knowles of Brewer and Emma and Elsie Twitchell of Turner ; three siblings, Galen Knowles and his wife Joy of Holden, Harley Knowles and his wife Cindy of Tennessee, and Holly Knowles of Brewer; nieces and nephews. Vaughn had a huge extended family whom he was very close with and he had amazing friends who were always there for him. Vaughn was predeceased by his father and a brother, John Knowles.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice for their devotion and compassion to Vaughn and his family through this difficult journey. They made it possible for him to be at home on Beech Hill Pond during his final days.
Vaughn wrote in an essay “My legacy will not be what people read or write about me, my legacy will be and is my family. Period”
Services will be held at a later date and private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. Messages and memories may be shared with his family at kileyandfoley.com.
