Obituary of Mary L Searway
It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Searway announces her passing at age 95 on December 20, 2022 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was born in Bangor to Delphis and Catherine (Callaghan) Gagne. Mary sent some time at Sister's Home in Bangor when her mother was ill. Her mother died when Mary was in her early teens and at that time she went to live with the Murray family.
Mary attended St. John's School and graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1947. Her yearbook called her "The Lady of the Helping Hand." After graduation, Mary married the love of her life Harold "Jackie" Foster. They purchased a home in Hampden where they raised three sons. After 27 years of marriage, Jackie passed away suddenly. Mary then returned to Bangor where she had been employed at Viner's Shoe as a young woman and then retired after 19 years at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mary had many hobbies including sewing, quilting, cooking and working in her beautiful flower gardens, but she always found some time to give to the church and community. She was the Past President of many clubs, including St. John's Women Council, Bangor MDCCW Daughter's of Isabella #422, St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary and also volunteered at St. Joe's after retirement.
After being single for 18 years, she married George "Bouncy" Searway and helped care for his brother Bo until his passing. Mary and Bouncy moved to The Leach Home in Brewer where they had wonderful friends and neighbors.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; younger sister Regina; brother Robert. She is survived by her sons and their spouses: Robert and Sally of Gardiner, George and Cheryl of Brunswick and Michael and Gail of Solon; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care doctors and nurses at NLEMMC for all their care and compassion during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to Catholic Charities of Maine, P.O. Box 10660, Portland, ME 04104 or John Bapst Memorial High School, 100 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.
