Obituary of Donald H. Stewart
Donald H. Stewart, 92, husband of the late Velma K. (Gass) Stewart, passed away peacefully August 8, 2024, in Bangor. He was born in Brewer April 23, 1932, the son of Charles E. and Elizabeth (Dale) Stewart.
On April 23, 1953, he married the love of his life of 70 years, Velma, in Brewer where they settled and raised their family. Over the years Donnie enjoyed camping trips with his family and friends, ski trips to the family camp in Greenville, summers at the camp in Lucerne, and wintering in Florida with Velma in their younger years.
Donnie was a carpenter and owner of “D. H. Stewart Builder.” He built many homes and businesses in the Brewer and Greater Bangor area, including his son’s first homes. He was so talented, he even built his own RV! He was a lover of golf but Velma didn’t let him forget that she was the only one in the family with two holes-in-one. He was a lover of Oreos and watching golf and baseball. Donnie was THE # 1 fan of the Boston Red Sox and was still quoting stats of the team the week before his passing.
Donnie has many titles, but the one he loved most was “Pa,” which is how he wrote his name, quotations and all. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always saying “we had a great time with you kids,” when telling his grandchildren stories about their childhood. He attended all of his grandchildren’s’ sporting events and performances, and taught them all how to play cribbage. He was an incredibly positive person, and even when he was feeling his worst he would tell you that he was “tip top.” Above all, he was a good friend, and a devoted husband and father who always showed up.
Donnie was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Edgar, Francis, Edward and Allen; sister, Helen (Hatch); in-laws Sally and Bill Zoidis, Kathy and Eddie Arnold, Andy and Keneen Gass. Donnie is survived by sons Bruce Stewart and his wife Yvette, Brent Stewart and his partner Kellie McKenney; grandchildren Tyler Stewart and his wife Riley, Megan Stewart, Mitchell Stewart, and Jacob McKenney; great-grandchildren Landry and Sienne Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
At Donnie’s request, services will be private. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer. Arrangements by Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, Bangor and Brewer. Messages and memories may be shared with Donnie’s family at kileyandfoley.com
