Matthew O'Neill

Obituary of Matthew A. O'Neill

Matthew Alexander O’Neill passed away at home on December 16, 2024, after a long period of declining health. Matthew was born in Bangor on May 10, 1979 to Julia Hoffmann O’Neill and Patrick O’Neill. He spent his early years in Castine. He graduated from The Adams School and Bucksport High School.

Matt moved to Texas and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Texas at Arlington. He later pursued an advanced degree, graduating from Baylor University’s Truett Seminary with a Masters Degree in Christian Ministry. This was a wonderful accomplishment for Matt, something he was very proud of. Upon graduation, he became a hospice chaplain and was a comfort to many people with his prayers and supportive presence.  He wanted a life of purpose, which he was able to fulfill until his own health made it impossible for him to continue. He had been a chaplain in Texas and Colorado before coming back to Maine to be closer to family. He purchased his home in Bangor and, with much effort over time, did a beautiful job restoring it. He loved funny movies and watching football. He appreciated art and good food, loved the ocean, and the peace of quiet places. Most of all, he loved his friends and he loved his family. Ultimately, Matt was just a good person who had some very tough challenges to overcome, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Matthew leaves behind his mother, Julia O’Neill and her partner Andrew Geraghty; father, Patrick O’Neill and wife Patricia; sister, Meghan Charette and husband Wayne; brother Andrew O’Neill and wife Cassiar; brother Timothy O’Neill and partner Hollie Stanwood; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
