Edgar Scott and I became friends when we entered our freshman year at Brewer Junior High in 1959. At the time, freshmen weren't able to attend the new high school on Parkway South. When we became sophomores, we attended the new high school.
Scottie and I weren't in any classes together but we often saw each other during the days in our freshman year. During my sophomore year, I moved from Orrington to Brewer. I then lived about a quarter of a mile from Scottie. We got together with many other kids in the neighboring area and played lots of sports... often until dark. As Archie and Edith Bunker would often sing "Those were the days"!
One day, Scottie invited me into his home and took me directly to his "communications center" in the basement of his home. He had a ham radio set-up that he used extensively to communicate almost everywhere. Also, Scottie had a huge record collection. He spent countless hours playing and listening to music, news, weather and sports. We were both avid Red Sox fans and often discussed their wins and losses in a "post critique" of their games. In fact, in our more recent years, we often emailed each other regarding the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. It was sad for both of us when these teams LOST. However, it was great joy when these teams WON.
I tried to see Scottie whenever I returned to Maine for a visit. We'd often meet at Linda and John Hodgins' home on Pendleton Street in Brewer since it was very close to the area where so many other friends also lived. We had a number of reunions there as well.
I was worried about Scottie recently because it had been a while since we last communicated. Scottie would often go on a trip for a couple weeks or a month at a time. I thought this was the reason I hadn't heard from him for a while. One day recently, I received an email from him. He used his phone to "write and send" it to me. He said he was in the hospital with blood clots in his lungs. Oddly, only a coupe days prior to his email to me, I called both St. Joseph's and North Star Eastern Maine Medical Center to inquire about Scottie. Both hospitals informed me they had no patient there by his name. Therefore, I felt he may have been released and went home.
On Friday, 30 April, I bought Scottie a birthday card. I also called Scottie regularly on his birthday. On 7 May, I returned a call to Weymo Wilson. He had left me a message on my voice mail. Weymo informed me Scottie had passed away between 3:45 and 4 a.m. on Saturday 1 May. It was an extremely sad time for both Weymo and me. When I inquired about the cause of Scottie's passing, Weymo told me Scottie had Atrial Fibrillation. His heart was only working at 10% efficiency. I think Scottie died as a result of a broken heart. And now, my heart is also broken. May he live forever in God's kingdom in Heaven.
With eternal love,
Will Jones
